Treatment for gum disease is intended to stop and reverse the spread of infection, preventing further damage to the gums and bones of the mouth. Ideally, proper oral hygiene and flossing are the first defense against gum disease. However, in some cases medication and general dentistry intervention are necessary. Fluoridated toothpastes, mouthwash, and scaling and polishing are typically the next line of defense before root planing or periodontal surgeries are considered.

Any treatments that you do receive will be explained in detail so that you know what you need to do to ensure the disease is not able to spread. We have found, due to how we communicate with our patients, that gum disease rarely causes major issues. Symptoms and Causes of Gum Disease
At the early stages of gum disease – also known as gingivitis – sore and swollen gums, redness and bleeding when you brush your teeth are typical symptoms. Gum disease is usually caused by poor or inadequate oral hygiene. Plaque begins to build up on the teeth, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. These unfriendly bacteria will start to attack the gums, causing gingivitis.
Another common symptom of gum disease is when the gum begins to recede. This only makes the problem worse, as the teeth and bone above the gum line become exposed. The risk of more serious damage is more likely, due to the fact that the supporting structures are also being attacked by the disease. If you do not have the disease treated, you could end up losing teeth that could have otherwise been saved through treatment of the gum disease.
