Composite Fillings

Composite fillings, in cosmetic dentistry, are the gift that keeps on giving. Whether you want to improve the look and shape of your teeth, or decay has caused damage, composite fillings can help you smile again. The tooth colored filling bonds to the tooth, restoring it to its former glory and prevents the advancement of decay. The filling is made from tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture, often referred to as a composite resin.

Dr. Walford and Marvin Village Dentistry offer full spectrum treatments using composite fillings. We believe that preventative treatment, in any case, is the best course of action. That is why we recommend composite fillings in the early stages of damage, in order to prevent the loss of teeth and to combat decay. Due to the thoroughness of our comprehensive exams, we are positioned to recommend composite fillings at the earliest stage possible. However, if you have any concerns about the health of your teeth, feel free to contact us at any time.

What is a Composite Resin?

Composite resin is a tooth-colored material which bonds to the surface of the tooth, or fills a cavity. The material is strong and durable, allowing you to eat and drink as normal. However, if you drink tea or other stain causing beverages, you may need an additional plastic coating to prevent discoloration. As composite resin is tooth-colored and can bond to the surface of the tooth, it is a much more preferable choice than traditional amalgam fillings.

Another advantage of composite fillings is that the resin flexes with the tooth. Without the ability to flex, the tooth can become cracked and cause more damage. It is also important for the supporting bone structure that the tooth is not rigid. Unlike with amalgam fillings, composite resin works in exactly the same way as the natural tooth – which is especially important when a cavity needs filled.
